Course overview
This course is designed for adult international students entering universities seeking either undergraduate or graduate degrees in North America. Students must be conditionally accepted or accepted into a university. This is a summer intensive course that will strengthen language skills and academic strategies in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This course will also prepare students to effectively interact in the social environment of a North American university.
Our classroom is centered upon the principles of communicative language teaching, which emphasizes learner-centered instruction, placing the student at the center of the classroom. Through team-based learning (TBL) students will cooperate and negotiate solutions with their classmates. Emphasis is placed on individual preparation and group collaboration. Vocabulary and grammar are taught in context and tailored to students' needs. Technology is utilized to enhance learner autonomy, both in and out of the classroom. Students are encouraged to be reflective learners throughout the course. The technology used by the instructor and learners in the course is meant to create a blended learning environment where face-to-face interactions are enhanced with online delivered content and instruction.

- Organize and write well-developed academic essays with a high degree of accuracy and organization by conducting research and writing a short academic paper.
- Improve spoken fluency, competence, and accuracy through classroom discussions, individual presentations, and group projects.
- Read academic texts and listen to lectures with greater speed, accuracy, and understanding by practicing strategies for critical reading and listening.
- Develop skills such as note-taking, summarizing, and critical thinking through examination and implementation of best study practices.
